The fifth largest airport in Sweden, Luleå Airport services ten of the fourteen municipalities in Norrbotten and is considered an important and significant domestic and international airport. Located only seven kilometres from the city centre, it employs around 1,100 people directly and indirectly.
Originally operational as a military airfield in 1941, the airport later opened up to civilian traffic in 1944. The number of passengers steadily increased over the decades and stabilized during the 1990s.

Baby Care and diaper-changing facilities are available in all restrooms along with free strollers. Luggage Storage & Locker services are available for storage periods of up to two weeks. Small bags cost SEK 40 per day, large bags SEK 50 and dog crates SEK 60 per day.
